Ernie Els pictures and

players to win the South African Open, South African

Ernie's first major championship victory came at the
1994 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club where he
defeated Colin Montgomery and Loren Roberts in a
playoff that lasted 20 holes. Ernie Els captured his
second U.S. Open in 1997 at Congressional Club,
outlasting Colin Montgomery and Tom Lehman, and
becoming the first foreign player since Alex Smith
(1906 and 1910) to win the U.S. Open more than once.
One week later, Ernie Els successfully defended his
Buick Classic crown and was ranked first in the
Official World Golf Ranking.
